About banking & insurance exams

Banking exams recruit for one of India's most sought-after white-collar careers. The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) and the State Bank of India run tiered exams — Prelims, Mains and often an interview — for Probationary Officer and Clerk posts across public-sector banks, while insurance bodies recruit officers on a similar template.

The tests are speed games built on three pillars: Reasoning Ability, Quantitative Aptitude and English Language, with Mains adding General/Banking Awareness and a descriptive writing module. Sectional timing, high question volume and negative marking mean accuracy-per-minute is the real skill being measured.

Because Prelims is purely qualifying and Mains decides merit, the candidates who convert are those who clear the speed threshold early and then peak on awareness and depth — exactly what structured sectional and full-length practice builds.

How to prepare for banking & insurance exams

1

Train for speed with accuracy

Banking Prelims is won on speed. Build sectional timers for Reasoning, Quant and English until you clear the cut-off comfortably with time to spare.

2

Own Banking Awareness for Mains

Mains rewards current and banking-sector awareness. Track RBI announcements, financial news and static banking facts across the prep window.

3

Practise descriptive writing

The Mains descriptive module needs practised letter and essay writing — rehearse against clear rubrics, not just multiple-choice drills.

Banking & Insurance exams — frequently asked questions

What is the difference between IBPS PO and Clerk?

IBPS PO recruits Probationary Officers — an officer-cadre role with management responsibilities — while the Clerk exam recruits for clerical, customer-facing positions. Both follow a Prelims-plus-Mains structure, but PO adds an interview and generally sets a higher bar.

Is there negative marking in banking exams?

Yes, typically 0.25 mark is deducted per wrong answer in the objective sections of IBPS and SBI exams. Disciplined attempting is therefore important, and our test player applies the exact penalty to your practice score.

How important is speed in banking Prelims?

Very. Prelims gives you around a minute per question across Reasoning, Quant and English with separate sectional timing, so speed with accuracy is the deciding skill. Sectional practice is the fastest way to build it.
