About english proficiency exams

English-proficiency tests certify that you can study, work or live in an English-speaking environment, and they are required by universities, employers and immigration authorities across the world. IELTS is the most widely accepted, with TOEFL iBT strong for North American universities and PTE popular for its fast, computer-scored results.

All four skills are assessed — Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking — but the formats differ: IELTS offers Academic and General Training versions and can be paper or computer based, TOEFL is fully internet-based with integrated tasks, and PTE is entirely computer-scored including the speaking section. Results are reported on band or scaled scores rather than pass/fail.

Because the scoring rubrics are specific and repeatable, targeted practice against the real task types — timed reading passages, integrated writing, recorded speaking — is the surest way to reach your target band.

How to prepare for english proficiency exams

1

Practise all four skills to the rubric

Scores are set against detailed band descriptors. Practise Writing and Speaking against those criteria, not just for fluency, to target the exact band you need.

2

Time your Reading and Listening

These sections are as much about pace as comprehension. Rehearse under the real clock with authentic passages and audio.

3

Record and review your Speaking

Record answers, then review them for fluency, coherence, vocabulary and pronunciation — the four things examiners actually score.

English Proficiency exams — frequently asked questions

Which English test should I take — IELTS, TOEFL or PTE?

It depends on what your university, employer or immigration authority accepts. IELTS is the most widely accepted globally, TOEFL iBT is strong for North American universities, and PTE is valued for fast, fully computer-scored results. Check your institution's requirement first, then prepare specifically for that test.

What is the difference between IELTS Academic and General Training?

IELTS Academic is for higher-education admission and professional registration, while General Training is for work, migration and secondary education. The Listening and Speaking sections are the same, but the Reading and Writing tasks differ. Our IELTS hub covers both.

How is the IELTS band score calculated?

IELTS reports a band from 0 to 9 for each of the four skills, and an overall band that is their average. Writing and Speaking are scored against four criteria each. Our IELTS practice models these criteria so you can target a specific band.
