TOEFL iBT Mock Tests, Syllabus & Complete Exam Guide

The TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language, Internet-Based Test), run by ETS, measures how well a non-native speaker can use and understand English at university level. It has four sections — Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing — and is used by more than 12,000 universities and institutions worldwide as proof of English proficiency for admission, and often for visas and professional licensing.

Two of the four sections are audio-based: Listening plays recorded academic lectures and campus conversations that you hear once (with the option to take notes) before answering, and Speaking is delivered by speaking into a microphone. Reading is passage-based multiple choice, and Writing has two typed tasks. The whole test now takes about two hours, and each section is scored 0–30 for a total out of 120, with no negative marking.

In the Listening section you hear the audio only — there is no transcript on the real test — so the skill being measured is understanding spoken English in real time: the main idea, specific details, a speaker's attitude or purpose, and how ideas connect. Because the exam rewards familiarity with its specific formats — note-taking under audio, integrated tasks that combine reading, listening and speaking or writing, and academic vocabulary — timed, exam-style practice is the most efficient way to raise your band. Rehearsing the Listening question types with audio is especially important, since reading a transcript is far easier than understanding the same content by ear.
