Recruitment to Level 1 posts of the Indian Railways such as Track Maintainer Grade-IV, Helper/Assistant in various technical departments, Assistant Pointsman and Pointsman.

What is the RRB Group D exam?

RRB Group D — conducted by the Railway Recruitment Boards and Railway Recruitment Cells of the Ministry of Railways — recruits for the Indian Railways' Level 1 posts: Track Maintainer Grade-IV, Helper/Assistant in the Electrical, Mechanical, Signal & Telecommunications and Engineering departments, Assistant Pointsman and Pointsman. These are the frontline hands who keep India's railway network — one of the largest in the world — running safely every day.

It is the single largest recruitment examination in India: recent cycles have drawn well over a crore applications, far more than any other government or entrance exam. Selection is through one Computer-Based Test of 100 questions, taken in any of 15 languages, followed by a qualifying Physical Efficiency Test, document verification and a medical examination. The academic bar is Class 10 (or an ITI/NAC), which is what makes it so widely accessible.

Why Group D is a distinct, high-competition exam

Two features set Group D apart. First, the Physical Efficiency Test: unlike most clerical exams, Group D requires candidates to meet running, lifting and carrying standards, reflecting the physical nature of track and depot work — so preparation is as much physical as academic. Second, the sheer scale and normalisation: with lakhs of candidates spread across many shifts, marks are normalised across sessions, and cut-offs are decided finely, often to a fraction of a mark.

Eligibility criteria

Educational qualification
A pass in Class 10 (Matriculation) OR an ITI certificate from an NCVT/SCVT institution OR a National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) granted by NCVT.
Age limit
Generally 18–36 years (with the notified relaxations), with upper-age relaxation for SC/ST (5 years), OBC (3 years), and other reserved categories per railway rules.
Physical Efficiency Test (PET)
Mandatory and qualifying. Male and female candidates must meet prescribed running, lifting and carrying standards; the PET marks are not added to the merit list.
Medical standards
Candidates must meet the medical fitness standard prescribed for the post (e.g. A2, A3, B1, B2, C1, C2) — vision and physical fitness requirements vary by post.
Number of attempts
No fixed cap on attempts, subject to the upper age limit for your category.

    Make Reasoning your scoring engine

    With 30 questions, General Intelligence & Reasoning is the largest section and the most scoreable. Drill analogies, series, coding-decoding, classification, blood relations and directions until they are fast and automatic — this is where you build a lead.

    The 25 Maths questions are basic but time-sensitive. Practise number system, percentage, ratio, average, profit & loss, simple and compound interest, time-speed-distance and mensuration, and learn shortcuts to save seconds under the clock.

    Guess wisely against 1/3 negative marking

    Unlike Group 4, Group D deducts 1/3 mark per wrong answer. Attempt questions you can reason towards, but avoid blind guesses on questions where you can't eliminate options — accuracy protects your normalised score.
