The Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) is a national-level management-entrance exam conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur, one of India's oldest and most respected business schools. A single XAT score is used for admission to XLRI's own flagship programmes and to more than 150 associated B-schools, including XIM University Bhubaneswar, across the country. XAT is usually held on the first Sunday of January as a computer-based test lasting about three hours.

XAT is widely regarded as one of the tougher MBA-entrance exams, partly because of its uniquely challenging verbal and quantitative questions and partly because of its signature Decision Making section, which no other major exam replicates. Rather than only testing knowledge and calculation, XAT asks candidates to weigh real business and ethical situations and choose the most appropriate course of action — a skill that mirrors managerial life.

Part 1 of XAT carries three scored sections — Verbal and Logical Ability, Decision Making, and Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation — that together decide the percentile used for shortlisting. Part 2 is General Knowledge, which is scored but usually not counted towards that percentile, and in some years an essay is also included. Each correct answer earns 1 mark, each wrong answer costs 0.25, and there is a small extra penalty for leaving more than 8 questions unattempted in the scored sections.

Because of the negative marking and the unattempted-question penalty, XAT rewards calm, selective attempting over blind guessing. The Decision Making section in particular has no formulas to fall back on — it demands careful reading, an eye for the interests of all stakeholders and sound judgement. Strong, balanced performance across all three scored sections, rather than a single strong area, is what produces a high XAT percentile.
