UPTET — the Uttar Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test — is the state-level eligibility test a candidate must pass to be considered for a teaching post in Uttar Pradesh's government and recognised schools. In line with the Right to Education Act's requirement that teachers meet a minimum professional standard, states conduct a TET; UPTET is Uttar Pradesh's version. Qualifying UPTET does not by itself give a job — it certifies your eligibility, after which you compete in the state's teacher-recruitment process.

The test has two papers matched to the level you want to teach. Paper I is for the primary level (Classes 1-5) and Paper II for the upper-primary level (Classes 6-8). Each paper has 150 multiple-choice questions for 150 marks in 2 hours 30 minutes, with no negative marking. Paper I covers Child Development & Pedagogy, Language I (Hindi), Language II (English), Mathematics and Environmental Studies; Paper II keeps the pedagogy and language sections and adds the candidate's chosen subject area.

Because there is no negative marking, UPTET rewards full attempting and steady accuracy rather than risk management. Child Development & Pedagogy is the section that most distinguishes strong candidates — learn the core ideas of Piaget, Vygotsky, learning and motivation, assessment (CCE, formative vs summative) and inclusive education, and practise applying them to classroom situations rather than memorising definitions.

The two language sections test grammar, comprehension and language pedagogy — Hindi in Devanagari and English — so read short passages and revise grammar rules until they are quick. For Paper I, Mathematics and Environmental Studies are pitched at the primary level and are highly scoreable with practice on number work, measurement, EVS concepts and their pedagogy. Full-length timed mocks build the stamina the 150-question, 2.5-hour paper demands and reveal which sections need more revision.
