About the TNPSC Group 2 exam

Recruitment to Tamil Nadu's Group II (interview) and Group IIA (non-interview) posts such as Deputy Commercial Tax Officer, Sub-Registrar and departmental Assistants.

What is TNPSC Group 2 & 2A?

TNPSC Group 2 & 2A — the Combined Civil Services Examination-II — recruits for a broad band of state government posts a rung below the elite Group 1 services. A single examination fills two categories at once: Group II 'interview posts' and Group IIA 'non-interview posts', which is why the exam is usually written as 'Group 2 & 2A'.

The distinction matters for how you are selected, not what you study. Every candidate sits the same Preliminary and Main examinations; the difference is the final stage. Group II interview posts add a 40-mark oral test on top of the Mains, whereas Group IIA non-interview posts are decided on the written examination alone. Because Group 2 offers a large number of vacancies across many departments, it is one of the most sought-after openings for graduates in Tamil Nadu.

How the three stages fit together

Selection runs in up to three stages. The Preliminary test is purely a screening filter — you need at least 90 out of 300 to qualify, and your marks decide only whether you advance, not your final rank. Those who clear it move to the descriptive Main examination, which has a qualifying Tamil paper and a General Studies paper that actually counts towards merit.

For Group II interview posts, a 40-mark oral test then follows, making the Mains and interview together the basis of the merit list. For Group IIA non-interview posts, the Mains marks alone decide selection. A distinctive feature of the Group 2 Prelims is its General Tamil / General English section, so language proficiency — not only general knowledge and aptitude — is tested from the very first stage. Practising exam-accurate, bilingual mock tests lets you build the speed for the objective Prelims and the language command the paper demands.

TNPSC Group 2 eligibility & exam pattern

The Preliminary test has 200 objective questions for 300 marks (1.5 marks each) over 3 hours, with NO negative marking. Alongside General Studies and Aptitude, it includes a General Tamil / General English section — you answer whichever language you choose. A minimum of 90 marks is needed just to be eligible for the Mains ranking.

Duration: 3 hours (180 minutes).

How to prepare for TNPSC Group 2

A proven, focused TNPSC Group 2 preparation method — from building strong fundamentals to peaking with full-length mocks.

  1. 1

    Don't neglect the language section

Unlike Group 1, the Group 2 Prelims carries a substantial General Tamil / General English section. Decide your language early and revise its grammar, literature and vocabulary — these are scoring marks many aspirants leave on the table.

  2. 2

Clear the 90-mark filter with room to spare

Because 90 out of 300 is only the eligibility floor and the real cut-off is higher, aim well above it. A balanced attempt across all three sections is safer than banking everything on General Studies.

  3. 3

Root your General Studies in Samacheer Kalvi

The degree-standard General Studies still rests on the Tamil Nadu state-board (Samacheer Kalvi) and NCERT textbooks. Master these first, paying special attention to the Tamil Nadu-specific units on society, culture and reformers.

  4. 4

    Turn Aptitude into guaranteed marks

The Aptitude & Mental Ability questions are the most predictable part of the paper. Drill percentages, ratios, time-and-work, series and coding until they are quick, since with no negative marking every attempt only helps.

  5. 5

Follow current affairs with a Tamil Nadu lens

Track state schemes, appointments and events alongside national and international news, from roughly a year before the exam — Tamil Nadu current affairs recur across both the Prelims and the Mains.

  6. 6

    Start Mains answer-writing early

Since the descriptive Mains, not the Prelims, decides your rank, begin practising structured written answers in your chosen language while you revise for the Prelims, so the jump to the descriptive stage never catches you off guard.

TNPSC Group 2 marks, cut-offs & selection

The Preliminary test only screens candidates for the Mains — you must first cross the minimum qualifying mark of 90 out of 300, and then reach the category cut-off to be shortlisted. Final selection is built from the descriptive Mains (and, for Group II interview posts, a 40-mark oral test). The bands below are indicative Prelims zones.

The Preliminary pattern, the 90-mark qualifying floor, the bilingual format and the Group II / IIA distinction are the official TNPSC Group 2 & 2A details. Prelims cut-offs and score zones are indicative, based on recent-cycle trends, and vary each year; final selection is decided by the Mains (and interview, for Group II posts). Always verify current specifics on tnpsc.gov.in.

TNPSC Group 2 — frequently asked questions

Quick, reliable answers to the questions TNPSC Group 2 aspirants ask most.

What is the difference between TNPSC Group 2 and Group 2A?

Both are recruited through the same Preliminary and Main examinations, but they differ at the final stage. Group II posts (such as Deputy Commercial Tax Officer and Sub-Registrar) are 'interview posts' — selection includes a 40-mark oral test after the Mains. Group IIA posts (such as departmental Assistant) are 'non-interview posts', where the descriptive Main examination alone decides selection.

What is the TNPSC Group 2 Prelims exam pattern?

The Preliminary test is a single objective paper of 200 questions worth 300 marks (1.5 marks each), to be completed in 3 hours with no negative marking. It covers General Studies at degree standard, an Aptitude & Mental Ability Test, and a General Tamil / General English section. A minimum of 90 out of 300 is required to qualify for the Mains.

Is TNPSC Group 2 conducted in Tamil and English?

Yes. The examination is fully bilingual — the questions are provided in both Tamil and English, and candidates may read and answer in whichever official language they prefer. The Prelims additionally includes a General Tamil or General English language section, and the Mains has a compulsory Tamil Eligibility Test.

What is the selection process for Group 2 & 2A?

There are up to three stages: a Preliminary test (objective, for screening only, minimum 90/300 to qualify), a descriptive Main examination (a qualifying Tamil paper plus a General Studies paper that counts towards merit), and — for Group II interview posts only — a 40-mark oral test. Group IIA non-interview posts are selected on the Mains alone.

What is the eligibility for TNPSC Group 2?

A Bachelor's degree in any discipline is the basic requirement, along with being within the age band (generally 21–32 years, with relaxations for reserved categories) and having adequate knowledge of Tamil. Some technical posts specify particular qualifications, and certain posts have their own minimum age.

How should I use mock tests to prepare for TNPSC Group 2?

Take full-length bilingual Prelims mocks in your chosen language to rehearse attempting all 200 questions in 3 hours across General Studies, Aptitude and the language section. Use subject and topic tests — especially for the language paper and the Tamil Nadu units — to build depth, and review each mock to close weak areas before the next attempt.
