About the SSC MTS exam

A national recruitment exam that selects Multi-Tasking (Non-Technical) Staff for central government ministries and departments, and Havaldars for the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) and the Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN).

What is the SSC MTS exam?

SSC MTS is the Staff Selection Commission's recruitment exam for the post of Multi-Tasking (Non-Technical) Staff — a Group C non-gazetted post in central government ministries and departments — and for the post of Havaldar in the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) and the Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN). Because it needs only a Class 10 qualification and offers a stable central-government job, it is one of India's largest recruitment exams by number of applicants each year.

The selection is based on a Computer Based Test held in two sessions on the same day. Session I covers Numerical and Mathematical Ability and Reasoning Ability and Problem Solving with no negative marking; Session II covers General Awareness and English Language and Comprehension with a 1-mark penalty for each wrong answer. Candidates applying for Havaldar posts must also clear a Physical Efficiency Test and Physical Standard Test. How to clear SSC MTS

Because Session I has no negative marking, you should attempt every question in Numerical and Mathematical Ability and Reasoning Ability and Problem Solving — there is nothing to lose by guessing. Drill number system, percentage, ratio, average, profit and loss, time and work, mensuration and simple interest, and practise analogy, series, coding-decoding, blood relations, direction and non-verbal reasoning until they are quick and automatic.

Session II does carry a 1-mark penalty, so here disciplined attempting matters: answer General Awareness and English confidently and avoid blind guesses. Build static GK — history, polity, geography, general science, static GK and sports — steadily over time, and keep English simple with grammar, vocabulary, spelling and short comprehension. Full-length timed mocks build the session-balance and stamina the two-session paper demands, and Havaldar aspirants should also keep up a walking and fitness routine for the PET/PST.

The SSC MTS & Havaldar computer-based test is held in two sessions on the same day, each of 45 minutes. Session I has two sections — Numerical and Mathematical Ability (20 questions, 60 marks) and Reasoning Ability and Problem Solving (20 questions, 60 marks) — for a total of 40 questions and 120 marks, with NO negative marking. Session II has two sections — General Awareness (25 questions, 75 marks) and English Language and Comprehension (25 questions, 75 marks) — for a total of 50 questions and 150 marks, with a penalty of 1 mark for each wrong answer. The whole test therefore carries 90 questions for 270 marks. The paper is set at the matriculation (Class 10) level. Candidates applying for Havaldar posts in CBIC and CBN must additionally clear a Physical Efficiency Test and Physical Standard Test (PET/PST), which is qualifying.     Practise analogy, series, coding-decoding, odd one out, blood relations, direction sense and non-verbal reasoning. These are Class-10 level and highly scoreable with regular practice.

    GA is high-return but Session II has negative marking. Learn static GK — history, polity, geography, general science and sports — a little every day and revise it regularly rather than cramming.
