What is the SSC CHSL exam?

SSC CHSL — the Combined Higher Secondary Level (10+2) Examination — is the Staff Selection Commission's recruitment exam for Group C posts such as Lower Division Clerk / Junior Secretariat Assistant (LDC/JSA), Data Entry Operator (DEO) and Postal Assistant / Sorting Assistant (PA/SA) in various ministries, departments and offices of the Government of India. It is one of India's most popular exams for 12th-pass candidates, offering a stable central-government career to lakhs of aspirants each year.

The selection has two computer-based tiers plus a skill test. Tier I is a 60-minute, 100-question paper across four equal sections — General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude and English Language — set at the 10+2 level. How to clear SSC CHSL

Tier I is 10+2 level, so the exam rewards speed and accuracy on familiar material. Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude are the most scoreable — drill analogy, classification, series, coding-decoding, percentage, ratio, interest, time & work and basic mensuration until they are quick and automatic. General Awareness is high-return and stable: build static GK — history, polity, geography, science, economy and sports — steadily over time rather than cramming.

English Language rewards basic grammar, vocabulary and comprehension: practise error spotting, fill in the blanks, synonyms/antonyms, spellings, idioms and short passages. Because every wrong answer costs half a mark, disciplined attempting matters — solve what you know and avoid blind guesses. SSC CHSL Tier I is a computer-based test with 100 objective questions carrying 200 marks, to be answered in 60 minutes. There are four sections of 25 questions (50 marks) each: General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude and English Language. Each correct answer earns 2 marks and each wrong answer carries a penalty of 0.5 marks; unanswered questions score zero. The paper is set at the 10+2 (Higher Secondary) level. Tier II is the deciding stage — a computer-based test covering Mathematical Abilities & Reasoning, English Language & General Awareness and a Computer Knowledge module, together with a Skill Test / Typing Test (data entry speed for DEO and typing for LDC/JSA and PA/SA), where objective wrong answers carry a 1-mark penalty.
