A national recruitment exam that selects Junior Engineers and allied technical staff — Junior Engineer, Junior Engineer (IT), Depot Material Superintendent and Chemical & Metallurgical Assistant — for the zones of the Indian Railways.

What is the RRB JE exam?

RRB Junior Engineer is the Railway Recruitment Boards' recruitment exam for Group B/C technical posts in the Indian Railways — chiefly Junior Engineer, along with Junior Engineer (IT), Depot Material Superintendent (DMS) and Chemical & Metallurgical Assistant (CMA). It draws lakhs of diploma and degree engineers each cycle because it offers a stable, well-paid technical career across the railway zones.

Selection has three parts: a first computer-based test (CBT 1) that screens candidates, a second computer-based test (CBT 2) that adds a discipline-specific technical section, and Document Verification with a Medical Examination. CBT 1 is a 90-minute, 100-question paper across four sections — Mathematics, General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness and General Science — set at the 10+2 (science) level. Because CBT 1 carries one-third negative marking and is time-pressured, accuracy under the clock is what gets you through to CBT 2.

How to clear RRB JE CBT 1

CBT 1 rewards speed and accuracy on familiar 10+2 material rather than deep specialisation. Mathematics and General Intelligence & Reasoning together make up more than half the paper, so they are the highest-value sections — drill arithmetic, algebra, mensuration, series, coding-decoding and blood relations until they are quick and automatic. What to focus on as you move through the plan

    Own Maths and Reasoning

    These two sections are more than half of CBT 1. Drill arithmetic, percentage, ratio, interest, mensuration, series, coding-decoding and blood relations until they are fast and automatic.

    Lock down General Science

    Physics, chemistry and biology at the 10th standard level are stable, high-return marks. Revise units, laws, formulae, chemical symbols and basic biology regularly rather than cramming.

  3. 3

    Build General Awareness steadily

    Read polity, history, geography, economy and current affairs a little every day, and add railway-specific static GK, so this shorter section becomes reliable marks.

  4. 4

    Respect the negative marking

    At −1/3 per wrong answer, blind guessing is costly. Attempt when you can eliminate to a confident choice, and leave questions you genuinely can't judge.

    Practise speed with full mocks

    The 90-minute paper is speed-based. Take full timed mocks to learn section balance and pacing, and review the solution for every question you miss.

  6. 6

    Plan ahead for CBT 2

    CBT 1 only screens; CBT 2's discipline-specific technical section decides merit. Start revising your engineering fundamentals in parallel so CBT 2 is not a fresh start.
