RRB Junior Engineer is the Railway Recruitment Boards' recruitment exam for Group B/C technical posts in the Indian Railways — chiefly Junior Engineer, along with Junior Engineer (IT), Depot Material Superintendent (DMS) and Chemical & Metallurgical Assistant (CMA). It draws lakhs of diploma and degree engineers each cycle because it offers a stable, well-paid technical career across the railway zones.

Selection has three parts: a first computer-based test (CBT 1) that screens candidates, a second computer-based test (CBT 2) that adds a discipline-specific technical section, and Document Verification with a Medical Examination. CBT 1 is a 90-minute, 100-question paper across four sections — Mathematics, General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness and General Science — set at the 10+2 (science) level. Because CBT 1 carries one-third negative marking and is time-pressured, accuracy under the clock is what gets you through to CBT 2.

CBT 1 rewards speed and accuracy on familiar 10+2 material rather than deep specialisation. Mathematics and General Intelligence & Reasoning together make up more than half the paper, so they are the highest-value sections — drill arithmetic, algebra, mensuration, series, coding-decoding and blood relations until they are quick and automatic. General Science (physics, chemistry and biology at school level) is stable and scoreable if revised steadily.

General Awareness rewards regular reading of polity, history, geography, economy and current affairs. Because every wrong answer costs one-third of a mark, disciplined attempting matters: solve what you know quickly and avoid blind guesses. Full-length timed mocks build the stamina and section balance the 90-minute paper demands, and once you clear CBT 1 you can shift focus to the technical section that dominates CBT 2.
