RPF Constable sample questions

A few real RPF Constable questions with answers and step-by-step solutions, in the exact style of the full mock tests.

General AwarenessSample 1

The zonal railway with its headquarters at Gorakhpur is:

  • A.North Eastern Railway
  • B.Northern Railway
  • C.East Central Railway
  • D.North Central Railway

Solution: North Eastern Railway is headquartered at Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh — which also has one of the world's longest railway platforms.

ArithmeticSample 2

In a train coach, 40% of the passengers are women and there are 54 men. How many passengers are in the coach?

  • A.80
  • B.90
  • C.108
  • D.120

Solution: If 40% are women, 60% are men. So 60% of the total = 54, giving total = 54 / 0.6 = 90.

General Intelligence & ReasoningSample 3

Platform : Station :: Runway : ?

  • A.Road
  • B.Airport
  • C.Harbour
  • D.Garage

Solution: A platform is a part of a station, just as a runway is a part of an airport.

About the RPF Constable exam

A national recruitment exam that selects Constables and Sub-Inspectors for the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Railway Protection Special Force (RPSF), the armed security force of the Indian Railways responsible for protecting railway property, passengers and the passenger area.

What is the RPF Constable exam?

RPF Constable is the Indian Railways' recruitment exam, conducted through the Railway Recruitment Boards, for the posts of Constable and Sub-Inspector in the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Railway Protection Special Force (RPSF). The RPF is the armed security force of the Indian Railways, charged with protecting railway property, passengers and the passenger area across the country's railway zones. Because it needs only a Class 10 qualification and offers a secure uniformed-services career, it attracts lakhs of young aspirants each drive.

The selection has three parts: a Computer Based Test (CBT), a Physical Efficiency Test and Physical Measurement Test (PET/PMT), and document verification. The CBT is a 90-minute, 120-question paper across three sections — General Awareness, Arithmetic and General Intelligence & Reasoning — set at matriculation level. Because it has a one-third negative mark and is speed-based, accuracy under time is what decides your CBT score, and the CBT score is what decides final merit.

How to clear RPF Constable

General Awareness carries the most questions (50 of 120), so it is the highest-return section — build static GK across polity, history, geography, science, railways and current affairs steadily over time. Arithmetic and Reasoning are the most scoreable with practice: drill percentage, ratio, interest, speed, time and work, mensuration, analogy, series, coding-decoding, blood relations and direction until they are quick and automatic.

Because every wrong answer costs a third of a mark, disciplined attempting matters: solve what you know quickly and avoid blind guesses. Full-length timed mocks build the stamina and section-balance the 90-minute paper demands, and after the CBT, consistent running and physical practice prepares you for the PET and the height/chest measurements of the PMT.

RPF Constable eligibility & exam pattern

Check whether you meet the RPF Constable eligibility criteria and understand exactly how the paper is structured and marked before you plan your preparation.

The RPF Constable & Sub-Inspector Computer Based Test has 120 objective questions carrying 120 marks, to be answered in 90 minutes. There are three sections: General Awareness (50 questions), Arithmetic (35 questions) and General Intelligence & Reasoning (35 questions). Each correct answer earns 1 mark and each wrong answer carries a one-third (1/3) negative mark; unanswered questions score zero. The paper is set at the matriculation (Class 10) level. Candidates who clear the CBT go on to the Physical Efficiency Test (PET), the Physical Measurement Test (PMT) and document verification, which are qualifying, with final merit decided by the CBT score. On ExamguruX, each question is scored +1 with a 1/3 penalty for a wrong answer, mirroring the real marking, and every question has a worked solution.

Duration: 90 minutes (CBT).

How to prepare for RPF Constable

A proven, focused RPF Constable preparation method — from building strong fundamentals to peaking with full-length mocks.

  1. 1

    Master General Awareness first

At 50 of 120 questions it is the biggest section. Learn static GK — polity, history, geography, science, railways and current affairs — a little every day and revise it regularly rather than cramming.

  2. 2

    Make Arithmetic automatic

Drill percentage, ratio, average, simple and compound interest, speed-time-distance, time and work and basic mensuration until Class-10 sums are fast and error-free.

  3. 3

    Sharpen Reasoning patterns

Practise analogy, classification, number and letter series, coding-decoding, blood relations, direction sense, ranking and simple syllogisms — these are quick marks once the patterns are familiar.

  4. 4

    Respect the negative marking

At −1/3 per wrong answer, blind guessing is costly. Attempt when you can eliminate to a confident choice, and leave questions you genuinely can't judge.

  5. 5

    Practise speed with full mocks

The 90-minute paper is speed-based. Take full timed mocks to learn section balance and pacing, and review the solution for every question you miss.

  6. 6

    Train for the PET/PMT early

The CBT is only the first stage. Build a running and fitness routine well ahead so the physical efficiency test and the height/chest measurements are a formality, not a fresh challenge.

RPF scoring & selection

The RPF Constable/SI Computer Based Test has 120 questions for 120 marks in 90 minutes, across three sections — General Awareness (50), Arithmetic (35) and General Intelligence & Reasoning (35). Each correct answer earns 1 mark and there is a one-third (1/3) negative mark for a wrong answer. Candidates who clear the CBT go on to the Physical Efficiency Test (PET), the Physical Measurement Test (PMT) and document verification, which are qualifying. Final merit is based on the CBT score. The bands below are indicative — real cutoffs shift each drive with vacancies and difficulty.

RPF Constable — frequently asked questions

Quick, reliable answers to the questions RPF Constable aspirants ask most.

What is the RPF Constable selection process?

Three stages: a Computer Based Test (CBT), a Physical Efficiency Test and Physical Measurement Test (PET/PMT), and document verification. The PET/PMT and document verification are qualifying; final merit is decided by the CBT score.

What is the RPF Constable exam pattern?

The CBT has 120 questions for 120 marks in 90 minutes, across three sections — General Awareness (50 questions), Arithmetic (35 questions) and General Intelligence & Reasoning (35 questions). The paper is at matriculation (Class 10) level.

Is there negative marking in the RPF exam?

Yes. Each correct answer earns 1 mark and each wrong answer carries a one-third (1/3) negative mark. There is no penalty for unanswered questions, so guess only when you can eliminate options to a confident choice.

What is the eligibility for RPF Constable?

You need to have passed Class 10 (Matriculation) and generally be between 18 and 28 years old, with age relaxation for reserved categories. You must also meet the physical (height, chest, running) and medical standards.

Which force does the RPF exam recruit for?

It recruits Constables and Sub-Inspectors for the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Railway Protection Special Force (RPSF), the armed security force of the Indian Railways that protects railway property, passengers and the passenger area. The post and zone you are allotted depend on your rank, preference and vacancies.

How should I use these mock tests?

Take full-length timed mocks to build speed and section balance under the real 90-minute clock and one-third negative marking, and review the solution for every question. Use the topic tests to drill General Awareness, Arithmetic and Reasoning until each becomes a reliable source of marks.
