JKPSC KAS Mock Tests, Syllabus & Complete Exam Guide

The JKPSC Combined Competitive Examination is conducted by the Jammu & Kashmir Public Service Commission to recruit gazetted officers for the Jammu & Kashmir Administrative Service (KAS) and allied services. It is the gateway to administrative careers in the union territory — posts such as Deputy Collector, J&K Police (Gazetted), Block Development Officer, Tehsildar and Excise & Commercial Taxes Officer are filled through a single competitive exam.

The selection runs across three stages. The Preliminary examination is an objective, OMR-based screening test built around General Studies, with a representative one-fourth negative marking for wrong answers. Those who clear it sit the descriptive Mains, which includes General Studies papers and language papers, and the process ends with a Personality Test (Interview). Final merit is built from the Mains written papers and the Interview — Prelims marks do not carry forward.

Prelims is a filter, so treat General Studies as the priority: build strong, revisable foundations in Indian and world history, Indian polity and governance, geography, the Indian economy, general science, environment and current affairs. Because JKPSC weights the region heavily, a dedicated command of Jammu & Kashmir's geography, rivers, history, culture, handicrafts and administration — from the Mughal gardens and the Jhelum to Pashmina and the 2019 reorganisation — is often what separates candidates near the cutoff.

The one-fourth negative marking rewards disciplined attempting: solve what you know, eliminate to a confident choice where you can, and leave questions you genuinely cannot judge. Full-length timed Prelims mocks train the pacing and section balance the paper demands. In parallel, prepare the descriptive Mains early — practise structured answer-writing and the Urdu language paper in Nastaliq script — because the written stage plus interview, not Prelims, decide your final rank.
