IPMAT sample questions

A few real IPMAT questions with answers and step-by-step solutions, in the exact style of the full mock tests.

Quantitative AbilitySample 1

The sum of a two-digit number and the number obtained by reversing its digits is 132. If the digits differ by 4, and the tens digit is larger, what is the original number?

  • A.84
  • B.62
  • C.73
  • D.95

Solution: If digits are a and b, (10a+b)+(10b+a)=11(a+b)=132, so a+b=12. With a-b=4, a=8, b=4, giving 84.

Verbal AbilitySample 2

Choose the word most nearly OPPOSITE in meaning to 'PRUDENT':

  • A.Cautious
  • B.Reckless
  • C.Thrifty
  • D.Sensible

Solution: 'Prudent' means careful and wise; its opposite is 'reckless', meaning rash or careless.

Logical ReasoningSample 3

Find the next term: 3, 12, 48, 192, ?

  • A.768
  • B.384
  • C.576
  • D.960

Solution: Each term is four times the previous term: 192 x 4 = 768.

About the IPMAT exam

The national aptitude test for admission, straight after Class 12, into the five-year Integrated Programme in Management (IPM / BBA+MBA) run by IIM Indore, IIM Rohtak and some other IIMs.

What is IPMAT?

IPMAT — the Integrated Programme in Management Aptitude Test — is the entrance exam for the five-year Integrated Programme in Management (IPM), an IIM degree you can enter straight after Class 12. The programme blends three years of undergraduate (BBA-style) study with two years of MBA-level management education, and on completion you are awarded an MBA. IIM Indore pioneered it, IIM Rohtak runs its own version, and several other IIMs now offer similar five-year integrated programmes.

The test measures aptitude rather than school syllabus recall. IIM Indore's paper has a Quantitative Ability section — with both multiple-choice and short-answer (type-in) questions — and a Verbal Ability section; IIM Rohtak's paper additionally has a Logical Reasoning section. Because most questions carry negative marking and the paper is timed at roughly two hours, speed, accuracy and section balance decide your score. Clearing the cutoffs earns a shortlist call for a Written Ability Test and Personal Interview.

How to crack IPMAT

Quantitative Ability is the heart of the exam: master arithmetic (percentage, ratio, profit-loss, time-speed-work), number system, algebra, modern maths (permutations, combinations, probability) and basic geometry. Practise the short-answer questions especially, because they carry no negative marking — every attempt is pure upside. Build calculation speed so you can clear more questions inside the tight time limit.

Verbal Ability rewards a strong vocabulary, solid grammar and quick, accurate reading. Drill synonyms and antonyms, idioms, error spotting, fill in the blanks and para jumbles, and read editorials daily to speed up comprehension. For IIM Rohtak, add Logical Reasoning — series, coding-decoding, arrangements, blood relations, directions, data sufficiency and puzzles. Take full-length timed mocks to learn pacing and, since wrong MCQ answers cost a mark, practise disciplined attempting: solve the sure ones, eliminate on the rest, and skip genuine blanks.

IPMAT is an aptitude test taken straight after Class 12 for the five-year Integrated Programme in Management. IIM Indore's test has a Quantitative Ability section (with both multiple-choice and short-answer questions) and a Verbal Ability section; IIM Rohtak's test also includes a Logical Reasoning section. Each correct answer earns 4 marks. Multiple-choice questions carry a penalty of 1 mark for a wrong answer, while the short-answer (type-in) Quantitative Ability questions carry no negative marking, so it is always worth attempting them. For example, on a 100-question multiple-choice set, answering 60 correctly and 20 wrongly scores 60 x 4 - 20 x 1 = 240 - 20 = 220. Because the multiple-choice questions penalise wrong answers, disciplined attempting matters — solve what you are confident about and use elimination before guessing. Candidates who clear the sectional and overall cutoffs are shortlisted for a Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI), and the final offer weighs the test score, WAT/PI and past academics. On ExamguruX, each question is scored +4 with a 1-mark penalty for a wrong answer, mirroring the real marking, and every question has a worked solution.

Duration: About 2 hours.

How to prepare for IPMAT

A proven, focused IPMAT preparation method — from building strong fundamentals to peaking with full-length mocks.

  1. 1

    Make Quant your strongest section

Arithmetic, number system, algebra, modern maths and geometry carry the most weight. Drill percentage, ratio, profit-loss, time-speed-work, permutations, combinations and probability until they are fast and automatic.

  2. 2

    Never skip the short-answer questions

The type-in Quantitative Ability questions have no negative marking, so every attempt is free upside. Practise them specifically and always fill in an answer, even when unsure.

  3. 3

    Build vocabulary and grammar daily

Verbal Ability tests synonyms, antonyms, idioms, error spotting, fill in the blanks and usage. Learn a little every day and read editorials to sharpen reading comprehension and para jumbles.

  4. 4

Train Logical Reasoning for IIM Rohtak

Series, coding-decoding, seating arrangements, blood relations, directions, data sufficiency and puzzles reward pattern practice. Solve sets under time until you spot the logic quickly.

  5. 5

Respect the negative marking on MCQs

At -1 per wrong multiple-choice answer, blind guessing hurts. Solve what you are confident about, eliminate options before guessing, and leave genuine blanks — but never leave short-answer questions blank.

  6. 6

    Practise with full timed mocks

The roughly two-hour paper is speed-based. Take full-length mocks to master section balance and pacing under the clock, and review the worked solution for every question you miss.

IPMAT scoring & selection

IPMAT is an aptitude test scored with +4 for every correct answer and -1 for a wrong one on the multiple-choice questions, while short-answer (type-in) Quantitative Ability questions carry no negative marking. A strong, balanced score across the sections earns a shortlist call, after which a Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI) — combined with your test score and academics — decide the final offer. The bands below are indicative; real cutoffs shift each year with the applicant pool and paper difficulty.
