About the GRE General Test exam

A standardized test accepted for admission to graduate, business and other postgraduate programmes worldwide, measuring verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and analytical writing.

What is the GRE General Test?

The GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) General Test, run by ETS, is one of the most widely accepted admissions tests for graduate school — including many master's, PhD and business (MBA) programmes worldwide. It measures three things: verbal reasoning (how well you understand and analyse written material), quantitative reasoning (basic mathematics and data analysis), and analytical writing (how clearly you build a reasoned argument).

Since September 2023, the GRE has been much shorter — under two hours, with one writing task instead of two and no unscored research section. Verbal and Quantitative are each scored on a 130–170 scale, the writing task on a 0–6 scale, and the test is section-adaptive rather than question-adaptive. There is no negative marking, so every question should be answered.

Why the GRE matters and how it's used

For most graduate programmes, the GRE is read alongside your transcript, statement of purpose, recommendations and experience — a strong score opens doors but rarely stands alone. What counts as 'strong' depends heavily on the field: quantitative-heavy programmes (engineering, economics, computer science) weigh the Quant score, while humanities and social-science programmes lean on Verbal and the writing score.

The shorter GRE General Test runs about 1 hour 58 minutes with no scheduled break. It has one Analytical Writing task ('Analyze an Issue', scored 0–6), two Verbal Reasoning sections (27 questions total) and two Quantitative Reasoning sections (27 questions total).
