AP Statistics sample questions

A few real AP Statistics questions with answers and step-by-step solutions, in the exact style of the full mock tests.

Exploring DataSample 1

Test scores are approximately normal with mean 61 and standard deviation 10. What is the z-score of a score of 41?

  • A.-0.2
  • B.-2
  • C.4.1
  • D.2

Solution: z = (41 − 61) / 10 = -2.

Collecting DataSample 2

A randomised block design is preferred over a completely randomised design when:

  • A.The sample is a census
  • B.Experimental units differ in a way expected to affect the response
  • C.All units are identical
  • D.There is only one treatment

Solution: Blocking accounts for known variation among units.

Probability & Random VariablesSample 3

X is binomial with n = 35 and p = 0.5. What is the standard deviation of X?

  • A.17.5
  • B.2.958
  • C.8.75
  • D.4.18

Solution: σ = √(np(1 − p)) = √(35 × 0.5 × 0.5) ≈ 2.958.

Sampling DistributionsSample 4

A population has standard deviation 22. What is the standard deviation of the sampling distribution of the sample mean for samples of size 25?

  • A.22
  • B.4.4
  • C.0.88
  • D.110

Solution: σ_x̄ = σ/√n = 22/√25 = 4.4.

Statistical InferenceSample 5

If two events are mutually exclusive, then:

  • A.P(A | B) = P(A)
  • B.P(A and B) = 0
  • C.P(A or B) = 1
  • D.P(A and B) = P(A) × P(B)

Solution: Mutually exclusive events cannot happen together.

How to prepare for AP Statistics

A proven, focused AP Statistics preparation method — from building strong fundamentals to peaking with full-length mocks.

  1. 1

    Inference language matters

Learn the exact wording for interpreting confidence intervals and p-values.

  2. 2

    Design questions are free points

Know sampling methods, bias types and the role of random assignment.

  3. 3

    Practise the normal model

z-scores, the empirical rule and sampling distributions come up repeatedly.

AP Statistics scores explained

AP exams are scored 1–5. The multiple-choice section is 50% of the score; the free-response section is the other 50%.
