About the AIBE exam

A qualifying examination that law graduates must pass to obtain the Certificate of Practice and practise law in India.

What is the AIBE?

The All India Bar Examination (AIBE) is a national qualifying examination conducted by the Bar Council of India. Unlike an entrance test, it is taken after law school: a graduate who has enrolled with a State Bar Council must pass the AIBE to be granted a Certificate of Practice, the licence required to appear before courts and practise law in India.

Introduced in 2010, the AIBE was designed to set a minimum standard of competence for the legal profession. It tests an advocate's basic knowledge of the law and, importantly, their ability to find and apply it — which is why it is conducted as an open-book examination in which candidates may consult bare copies of the relevant Acts.

Why the AIBE matters

Passing the AIBE is the gateway to practising law. Without the Certificate of Practice, a law graduate cannot represent clients in court, however strong their academic record. For most young lawyers, therefore, clearing the AIBE is one of the first professional milestones after graduation.

Because the exam is open-book and qualifying rather than competitive, the challenge is not memorising the law but navigating it quickly and accurately under time pressure. Success depends on knowing the structure of each Bare Act, understanding core doctrines, and practising enough questions to locate the right provision within seconds — exactly what a full-length mock series is built to train.

AIBE eligibility & exam pattern

Check whether you meet the AIBE eligibility criteria and understand exactly how the paper is structured and marked before you plan your preparation.

Each of the 100 questions carries 1 mark and there is no negative marking, so you should attempt every question. AIBE is an open-book exam — you may carry printed Bare Acts (without any notes, annotations or commentary) into the hall.

Duration: 3 hours 30 minutes (210 minutes).

How to prepare for AIBE

A proven, focused AIBE preparation method — from building strong fundamentals to peaking with full-length mocks.

  1. 1

Learn to navigate your Bare Acts

Because AIBE is open-book, your speed at finding a provision matters more than memorising it. Tab and index your Bare Acts, and practise jumping to the right section for a given topic in seconds.

  2. 2

    Prioritise the high-weightage subjects

Constitutional Law, CrPC and CPC alone contribute 30 marks, and with IPC, Evidence, Family Law and Contract you cover the bulk of the paper. Secure these before spending time on two-mark subjects.

  3. 3

Master core doctrines, not just sections

Many questions test principles — natural justice, res judicata, mens rea, the essentials of a valid contract. Understanding the doctrine lets you answer even when the exact section escapes you.

  4. 4

    Solve previous-year papers

The AIBE reuses concepts and even question styles year after year. Working through past papers, subject by subject and then as full sets, is the single highest-return activity in your preparation.

  5. 5

    Rehearse the open-book clock

You have 3 hours 30 minutes for 100 questions. Practise full-length mocks with your Bare Acts to build the rhythm of reading, locating and answering without running out of time.

  6. 6

    Aim comfortably above the cut-off

The pass mark is 45 (General/OBC) or 40 (SC/ST/PwD) out of 100, but target 60+ so that a few tricky questions never put your Certificate of Practice at risk.

AIBE scores, results & qualifying cut-offs

AIBE is a qualifying examination — there is no merit rank or percentile. You simply need to reach the passing mark for your category to earn the Certificate of Practice. The bands below show how a score translates into a result.

AIBE — frequently asked questions

Quick, reliable answers to the questions AIBE aspirants ask most.

What is the AIBE exam pattern and marking scheme?

AIBE is a 100-question, multiple-choice paper carried out over 3 hours 30 minutes in offline OMR format. Each correct answer earns one mark and there is no negative marking. It is an open-book exam, so candidates may bring printed Bare Acts — without any notes or commentary — into the examination hall.

What are the AIBE passing marks?

To qualify, General, OBC and EWS candidates must score at least 45 out of 100 (45%), while SC, ST and Persons with Disability candidates must score at least 40 out of 100 (40%). AIBE is purely qualifying — there is no rank or merit list, and clearing the cut-off is all that is required.

Who is eligible to appear for the AIBE?

Any candidate holding an LL.B. degree (three-year or five-year integrated) from a Bar Council of India-recognised law school, who has enrolled as an advocate with a State Bar Council, is eligible. There is no age limit and no restriction on the number of attempts.

What subjects does the AIBE cover?

The paper draws on 19 subjects from the undergraduate law curriculum, weighted by number of questions — Constitutional Law, CrPC and CPC contribute 10 each; IPC, Evidence, Family Law and the Contract/Property group contribute 8 each; and subjects such as Company Law, Cyber Law, Environmental Law, Land Acquisition and Intellectual Property contribute 2 each.

What is the Certificate of Practice and why do I need it?

The Certificate of Practice is the licence, issued by the Bar Council of India, that allows an enrolled advocate to actually practise law and appear before courts. Passing the AIBE is the condition for receiving it, which is why every law graduate who wishes to litigate must clear the exam.

How should I use mock tests to prepare for the AIBE?

Because AIBE rewards speed at locating the law rather than memorisation, mock tests are essential. Start with subject-wise tests to learn where each topic sits in the Bare Acts, then take full-length mocks with your Acts in hand to rehearse pacing across 100 questions in 210 minutes, and review every mistake to close your weak areas.
