What happens after the Mains result
- UPSC publishes the roll numbers of candidates who qualify for the Personality Test.
- Qualified candidates fill DAF-II (Detailed Application Form II) online, usually within a short window just after the result, with service and cadre preferences and supporting documents.
- Personality Tests are held at Dholpur House, New Delhi, in the following months. For this cycle they are expected in February–March 2027.
- The final result follows after the interviews.
Why start before the result
The interview board works from your DAF. Questions come from your hometown and state, your education, your work experience, your hobbies and your optional subject. All of that is already known to you today. Preparing it now costs nothing if you don't qualify, and gives you a month's head start if you do.
A plan for the waiting weeks
- Write out your DAF-I details and turn each line into five likely questions. For a hobby, that includes facts and current events linked to it.
- Prepare a short, honest answer to 'why civil services' and 'why this service preference'. Boards test whether your preferences make sense, not whether they sound impressive.
- Follow one national newspaper daily and keep short notes on the big issues of the last year. Interview questions often ask for a balanced view, not facts alone.
- If you are also writing Prelims 2027 (23 May 2027), keep a light daily GS routine going so you are not starting from zero if the result doesn't go your way.
Key takeaways
- UPSC CSE 2026 Mains was held in August. The result is expected around November 2026, but UPSC doesn't announce the date in advance.
- Qualified candidates fill DAF-II soon after the result; interviews are expected in February–March 2027.
- Start DAF-based interview preparation now. It costs nothing if you don't qualify.
